December 7, 2010 - Her Own Nativity

I have vivid memories, such vivid memories of the nativity scene that my mother used to lovingly pull from the box of Christmas decorations every year. She would set it up under the branches of our tree and I would lay on my stomach to be face to face with the tiny figure of baby Jesus. The manger was made of bark and moss, an angel in a flowing blue dress perched at the manger's peak. There was Mary and Joseph, the wise men, a shepherd with a lamb over his shoulders.

I loved that manger. Sadly, like the days of my mother pulling it from the box, that manger is no more. It was lost in a house fire four years ago. But it's still in my memories every Christmas. It's amazing how wonderful childhood memories stay with you and can still warm your heart years later. My mother gave me those memories, she made and handcrafted each one - and there are so many. How she loved Christmas. How I love Christmas still.

I don't own a manger like the one of my memories. I will one day, but like most things in life, they don't come cheap. But I wanted a manger under the tree for Georgia this year. And my husband helped me start this memory for her after he bought the child-friendly one I'd been eying.

Georgia is still trying to figure out what memories this new addition will hold for her.

December 5, 2010 - O Christmas Tree!

Today I'd like to show you pictures of Georgia all bundled up, her dark eyes peeking out from under a furry pink hat with ear flaps. I'd like to show you her red nose and her red cheeks, a perfect match to mommy's. I'd like to show you our search through rows and rows of possibilities wrapped up in the green-needled branches of various pines. I'd like to show you the exasperation on my husband's face as I decide I need to look one more time at my favorite trees. I'd like to show you Georgia gingerly reaching out to touch the Christmas needles, only to coil back at their light bite. I'd like to show you all these things, but when we arrived at the Christmas tree farm today and walked out into the middle of the tree-speckled field, I looked with dread at my camera and its flashing battery light.

So instead of all the wonderful pictures that could have been, you get these, a tree I finally got up and standing around midnight.

December 4, 2010 - Who Let the Dogs Out??

Well, not Georgia, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. She has finally started taking notice of how the baby gate opens and closes.

Today, her mission was to free the dogs!

Aw, no luck, but petting Bailey through the bars is the next best thing.

December 2, 2010 - Sinks Make Perfect Seats

Four days a week I face the challenge of getting ready for work while juggling Georgia. My biggest question is where to put her? While I'm focusing on my makeup or blow dryer or flat iron or contact lenses or whatever else, she seems to find any thing and every thing to get into in our partially child-proofed bedroom.

Today, my answer was this:

Give the kid a toothbrush, a she's happy for an hour! Give her two, mine and my husband's, and maybe she'll be happy for two!

12.02.10 017

She's so happy she even wants to share on of her toothbrushes...

12.02.10 003

... and then she drops on of them...

12.02.10 022

... and is no longer happy or in the sharing mood.

12.02.10 023

Oh well, at least I had time to get my contact lenses in.

December 1, 2010 - Mmm.. You Mix Chocolate with What?

Hazelnuts, Georgia. Hazelnuts.

Georgia had her first experience with the magical, mystical, heavenly spread known as the "best stuff on earth," a.k.a Nutella. I fell in love with this stuff years ago during college in the hostels of Europe. They always had it as breakfast time. Yum. It just would not be right for me to not pass the love on to my daughter.

I've noticed things she likes usually wind up on her face, so I think this is a "like."

Until they come out with a "reduced fat" Nutella (which will more than likely be never), I can now mostly live out my love through Georgia. May she have many happy years with the heavenly concoction.
